Ekadashi in Shuddha Paksha of Ashadha month is called Ashadhi Ekadashi or Devshayani Ekadashi. The importance of Ashadhi Ekadashi in Maharashtra is unique. On the occasion of Ashadhi Ekadashi, many devotees walk to Pandharpur and have the darshan of Vitthala. This is an age-old tradition in Maharashtra.
Currently, the month of Ashadha is going on. People coming from different parts of the state started towards Pandharpur on foot.
Significance and worship of Ashadhi Ekadashi :- Ashadhi Ekadashi is also called Devshayani Ekadashi. As told in the Puranas, Shri Vishnu goes to Patala as a gatekeeper to protect the kingdom of Baliraja. This period is Ashadhi Ekadashi and returns to Kartiki Ekadashi. Therefore, both these Ekadashis have unique significance. Pandurang or Vitthal is considered an avatar of Lord Vishnu. Hence lakhs of devotees worship Vitthal and go to Pandharpur on Ashadhi Ekadashi. Vitthal is worshiped on this day. It is said that Vishnu or Vitthala should be worshiped after taking bath in the morning. It is believed that one should observe Ekdashi fast for the whole day and perform Haribhajan and remember the name of God. When is Ashadhi Ekadashi? As per Hindu Panchang, Ashadhi Ekadashi will be celebrated on Thursday 29 June 2023 across the country including Maharashtra.
